Shaded pole motor diagram

A shaded-pole motor is a small squirrel-cage motor in which the auxiliary winding is composed of a copper ring or bar surrounding a portion of each pole. When single phase AC supply is applied to the stator winding, due to shading provided to the poles, a rotating magnetic field is generated.

What type of motor is a shaded pole?

The shaded pole induction motor is a self-starting single-phase induction motor with a copper ring shading one of the poles. The shaded ring is another name for the copper ring. This copper ring serves as the motor's secondary winding.

What is the principle of operation of shaded pole induction motor?

The working principle of a shaded pole induction motor is simple, the main winding carries alternating current and produces magnetic flux in the stator coil. The same magnetic flux is cut by the copper shaded band. Due to this, the EMF will be induced in the copper band.

What is the application of shaded pole motor?

In shaded pole induction motor, shaded coil will produce a very weak rotating magnetic field and also not at constant magnitude. Therefore these are small ratings starting from 20 watts. This motor can be used for toys, hair dryers, desk fans, cooling fans, slide projectors, advertising displays, Air conditioner etc.

Do shaded-pole motors need a capacitor?

Shaded pole motors are the original type of AC single-phase induction motor. Also called a single phase induction motor, simply connecting to a single voltage line and an external capacitor is required to make this motor turn.

Does a shaded pole motor have a start winding?

Unlike other types of single-phase motors, shaded-pole motors have only one main winding and no start winding or switch. As in other induction motors, the rotating part is a squirrel-cage rotor.

How efficient is a shaded pole motor?

The efficiency of shaded pole induction motor is very low almost in the range of 5 to 35%. The efficiency of shaded pole induction motor is low due to power loss in the shading coil.

What is shaded pole motor speed?

Such geared motors are commonly available with the final output shaft or gear rotating from 600 RPM down to as low as 1/168 revolutions per hour (1 revolution per week!). A further development dispenses with the shading rings altogether.

Can a motor be both AC and DC?

The universal motor is a type of electric motor that can operate on either AC or DC power and uses an electromagnet as its stator to create its magnetic field.

Why are shaded-pole motors self starting?

Shaded pole motor is a self-starting motor because it is a small squirrel-cage motor in which the auxiliary winding is composed of a copper ring or bar surrounding a portion of each pole. This auxiliary single-turn winding is called a shading coil.

How do you control the speed of a shaded pole motor?

Triac-type dimmer switches are commonly used to "throttle" ceiling fans. They have the shaded pole motors, so if you have a shaded pole motor device, go right ahead to use a normal dimmer as a throttle for that device. Also, series-wound "universal" motors can be throttled the same way.

What determines the direction of a shaded pole motor?

The position of shading poles determines the direction of rotation of the rotor.

Why do motors have 3 poles?

The magnetic fields in a three pole DC motor are generated by three electromagnets and two permanent magnets, as shown on the right. A section of the motor, called the commutator, connects the brushes to the coils and allows for current to flow from the power source, through the coils and back to the power source.

What is shaded pole structure?

A shaded pole induction motor is a type of self-starting 1-phase induction motor. It consists of a stator and a squirrel cage type rotor. The stator of the shaded pole motor is made up of salient poles and each pole is slotted on a side and a copper ring is fitted on the smaller part of the slot as shown in the figure.

Why poles are used in motor?

When the number of poles and the number of slots increases, a large torque can be obtained and the torque pulsation also decreases. The pole represents the number of permanent magnet poles for the rotating rotor, and a motor with one pair of N pole/S poles is called a two-pole motor.

What happens if you run a motor without a capacitor?

Capacitor Start Motor If the capacitor is been removed from this kind of motor, then it will not start rotating when power will be applied to the stator winding, as initial torque will be missing.

What are the disadvantages of shaded pole motor?

The disadvantages of shaded pole induction motor:

  • Low power factor.
  • The starting torque is very poor.
  • The efficiency is very low as the copper losses are high due to the presence of the copper band.
  • The speed reversal is also difficult and expensive as it requires another set of the copper ring.

Will a motor turn without capacitor?

A start capacitor is only used in the motor circuit for a second or two when it first starts to turn. Once the motor is up to speed, the start capacitor disconnects and is not used again until the next time the motor starts. If the start capacitor fails, then the motor will not be able to begin turning.

How do you tell if a motor is clockwise or counterclockwise?

The direction of rotation is usually written as a code. The code describes whether the motor rotates

How do you change the direction of a shaded pole motor?

The shaded pole motor rotates only in one particular direction, and the reverse movement of the motor is not possible.
