Amplidyne is a special purpose DC generator. These are used for speed controlling in electric trains and control the aiming of guns. The amplidyne characteristics are equivalent to that of a normal separately excited generator, however, its rise can be controlled through performing on the compensating winding.

What is amplidyne and metadyne?

Amplidyne is the most common version of the Metadyne. It consists of the basic metadyne in which a compensating winding is connected in series with the power output brush terminals. The compensating winding cancels out the d axis MMF, which opposes the control field MMF.

What is metadyne system?

A metadyne is a direct current electrical machine with two pairs of brushes. It can be used as an amplifier or rotary transformer. It is similar to a third brush dynamo but has additional regulator or "variator" windings.
